Definitely make sure you have a skilled, reputable tuner handy. I went down the stand alone road and have since returned to the factory ECU after thousands of dollars and countless headaches. I thought buying a quality stand alone like AEM's EMS (Haltech and others have since become more common) and spending the money to have it professionally tuned would be the proper way to do it. However, the car never ran properly after all of the money I spent on tuning and the tuner blamed the issues on mechanical issues with my motor. Now, years later, she's running great after having Z Car Garage take her back to the OEM ECU.
